If this isn't a wake-up call for Mr. Man to start paying up, then I don't know what is. He can't even leave the country to escape his responsibilities.

It's so wild of anyone to try to blame our protagonist for his failings. Like she said, it's not her fault that he doesn't read his own mail.

Dad of 2 denied at airport check-in after realizing passport got revoked for refusing to pay child support, family leaves him stranded: "It's not my responsibility to remind him to open his mail"
When traveling internationally, your passport is by far the most important thing. Sure, there are all sorts of travel "essentials" that would be incredibly annoying to forget while packing: undergarments, tooth brushes, or personal hair and skin products. I know for a fact I'd have a pretty miserable international travel experience if I didn't have my headphones on me. However, even if I forgot all of the aforementioned travel "essentials," I could always just buy more at my destination. Even clothes can be purchased in case of emergency.
A passport, however, is actually essential. I'm constantly feeling for it in my bag when I'm traveling just to make sure I didn't leave it strewn at some cafe or something. Apparently even if you're pretty responsible with keeping track of your passport, other areas in your life where you slacked off can still catch up to you and render you unable to fly. This is what happened to our protagonist's ex-husband when he refused to pay child support and got blocked at the airport check-in.
